FUN WITH AGILITY

Kyra Running the A-Frame |
We did have fun with agility. Since Kyra had the Hoofprint Charlene (her grand mom, Charly), and Hoofprint Emerald (her mom, Ashlee) stubborn streak, agility was often interesting. Kyra was a fast learner and quickly mastered the obstacles both with UKC, AKC, and CPE (Canine Performance Events). We never tried NADAC because this was highly competitive and speed on the agility course was not something Kyra was consistent about. She would be particularly speedy if she saw an obstacle “she” wanted to do, or if she saw a lake to swim in when she was supposed to be simply going over the A-Frame and not using it for a “lookout” tower to find something more interesting. Even with her inconsistent performance, she earned many first placements.

Kyra was the first White Shepherd to earn her UKC Agility Championship which she did on her 8th birthday. It was especially sweet because she had surgery for Lumbosacral Stenosis in January 2002 and was not expected to live or ever be out of diapers let alone be able to complete her championship or go on to compete in herding, obedience, and conformation. (She only had
21 points to earn which
is why I felt we could do it quickly). I never considered going after her Excellent title because although I knew
I could never stop her jumping, at that point, I didn’t want it to be because I asked her to. Another aspect of this fantastic accomplishment was that she finished her championship with one run to go. Pam and Michelle Koons, Kyra’s breeders and my dear friends, were there and I asked Michelle if she wanted to run Kyra for her last agility run. A photographer was there and got the whole thing. I loved seeing Kyra run for Michelle! |

Kyra’s first agility title was at Cobo Hall—a huge show in downtown Detroit. Kyra earned her AKC Standard agility title (NA) and her first leg toward her Jumpers title. She rarely completed a Jumpers course without knocking bars. In retrospect, the 24” jump was probably too much for her already developing spinal condition.
Kyra earned four fun titles with Canine Performance Events. This is a Michigan based event which has now spread throughout the country. They had four levels for each title which included standard, strategy, and other fun stuff. I think I’d like to do this with Kole as well.
Kyra ended up with eight agility titles. |
